West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
What are your memories of our former Aussie skipper? For me, right man at the time, a good leader and I'll always remember the ball to Zamora which ended up over Jens Lehman's head and into the net during our 'Great Escape' season.

Limited player, ex Millwall of course, a mercenary in every sense of the word, tough as nails and I think his leadership qualities helped shape Mark Noble's role as a leader.

Ultimately I have fond memories, but a bit of an unsung hero during his time with us, yet a vital member of the Curbishley era.

I remember he got untold stick from the media for agreeing to join us over Liverpool .
How very dare west ham pay someone more than a BIG club was pretty much the gist of it being as we were chucking the Icelandic's money about at the time !

A great captain and an unsung hero of the great escape, however his form dropped off alarmingly the next season I seem to remember.

I know someone who was at Millwall when he was there, and said he was an absolute top bloke, used to go back and see them after he left, all round good man.

Yeah done well at a grim time for us( when isn't). Seem to remember he could be a bit of a clumsy fouler though.

Re: West Ham Memories - Lucas Neill
The only thing stopping him being an absolutely top drawer player was his lack of pace.

That side of the world produced some decent players back then and they worked their socks off as well. Remember Tim Cahill being a real handful and Lazaridis did a decent job for us. Cracking goal against Brum.

Quality player AND captain, especially when compared to that twat Upson who followed.

I used to go and get autographs from the players when I was a kid at the players car park at UP.
I remember we had a bit of a shit result and it looked like the writing was on the wall and relegation was bound to happen.
Some players were coming out signed autographs usual stuff really but you could sense that they didn't quite believe we could stay up.
There was some kid probably no older than about 10 asked Lucas for his autograph.. he then said to him.. lucas will you stay when we go down. Neill to his absolute credit signed the shirt and then made a massive announcement.
'Everyone listen up.. as long as I am captain of this football club.. we will not be relegated.. we will stay up'
Probably about 500-600 people heard it and true to his word we stayed up. I'll always remember him for that. Good captain.. good leader.. not the best footballer but still a man we needed when we looked doomed

Last proper decent captain we had. Survived a 'hit' at the request of Mafia don Jamie Carragher. Top man
